leather dining room set

hi, this is clara from online fabric store. there are many creative ways to take an inexpensive piece of furniture and turn it into something unique. i'm going to be transforming an ikealack side table by covering it with vinyl and adding a decorative nail head trim. so let's get started. along with the side table, here's the materials and tools that you'll need: vinyl fabric, i'm using 2 yards of nassimi esprit regimental blue, a yardstick, a hammer, decorative nail heads, these are c.s. osborne french nickel nails, a rotary cutter and mat or scissors, a staple gun, a marker, and upholstery thread.

this table is about 22 by 22 inches square and 2 inches thick. plus i want the vinyl to wrap under the table about 2 inches on all sides so thats a total of 30 by 30 inches. for the legs i need enough material to wrap around the legs plus an inch for seam allowance. since this leg is 2 by 2 inches square, i'm going to cut 9 inches for the width. this leg is 16 inches long plus i'm adding an inch at each end to ensure that the top and bottom are covered. so i'll be cutting four 9 by 18 inch pieces for the legs. so i'm going to place the tabletop face down on the vinyl and center it. then i'm going to fold over one edge, pull it taut, and place one staple in the center. i'm going to go to the opposite edge that i put my first staple, fold it over,

and put another staple in and i'm stapling about half an inch from the edge. next you're going to add a staple to each side of your initial staple. remember to pull it taut as you do it. repeat the same thing on the opposite side, and i'm spacing out my staples roughly an inch. continue to work your way out towards the corners but stop a couple of inches before you get to the corner. so once i get close to the corner with my staples, i'm going to be making a fold that looks like this. and the first step of that is pulling this side taut, and adding one more staple. and then pulling this direction and stapling that in place. and finally, pulling straight up to create that fold and staple that in place.

add one more staple here. and then cut away my excess fabric to expose the hole that my leg is going to go into here. don't worry if this looks messy, it's going to be covered by the leg. for good measure, i'm just going to add one more staple. and repeat this on all 4 corners. so i'm going to mark my vinyl first before adding the decorative nail heads. i'm going to start an 1/8 of an inch in from the side and i'm centering my yardstick between the 2 edges. i'm going to make my marks 1 inch apart. i'm going to put my nail head on my mark and hammer it in.

if you're using a c.s. osborne upholstery hammer, the small end is magnetic. that's handy. i'm using an upholstery hammer but you might want to use a rubber mallet if the hammer is knocking off the finish of your nail heads. when sewing with vinyl, you want to pay attention to the tension on your sewing machine. normally it's around 4 but i'm going to increase it to 8. also with vinyl and leather you want your stitch length to be a little bit longer. i'm going to put it to 3.5 and that's because too many holes close together will perforate it and it may rip. so i have my leg pieces here. im going to fold it in half with the right sides facing inward

and sew a seam down the side with a 5/8 inch seam allowance. so at the beginning and end of your stitching, you don't want to back stitch because again you don't want to create too many holes so you're just going to stop and cut the strings longer than you usually would and then tie them. now i'm just going to turn these tubes inside out. i'm going to flatten out the seam first. now i'm going to slide my vinyl sleeve over my leg. once you get it started it slides pretty easily. i'm going to fold over two sides making sure the hole is visible and staple them in place.

you might have to hammer down your staples a little. it actually works better when you trim off these extra pieces. i left less material at the top to leave room for the holes so i have more at the bottom. trim off the extra thread. i'm going to take this double sided screw thing and start it in the leg. then put it in the hole on the bottom side of the table and spin. i'm just going to trim off this excess vinyl which you can also do before putting on the legs. and here's the finished product. adding nail head trim is a great way to add interest to an otherwise plain piece of furniture
